A Landfill is a Terrible Thing to Waste

Organics Recycling - Alameda Moves Toward 75% Diversion by 2010

The City of Alameda has implemented a tremendous enhancement to your existing yard waste collection. Implementation began Monday, October 7, 2002, and is nearly complete. This new program is referred to as "organics" collection. Organic materials include yard waste, table scraps, and food-soiled paper products. There are several exciting aspects to this program:

  • This program is very progressive and when fully implemented will represent one of the largest such programs in the State of California, and the nation.
  • Participating in this program greatly helps the City of Alameda meet the County's voter- approved Measure D goal to divert 75 percent of all municipal solid waste from landfills by
  • This program enhancement comes at no additional cost to you now, or when the program is fully implemented citywide.

The program requires one simple behavioral change: to place the following types of materials in your yard waste (organics) container rather than your garbage container:

  • Food scraps: including vegetable and fruit matter, meat, bone, egg shell, rice, pasta, bread, and coffee grounds.
  • Food soiled paper: including paper towels and napkins, pizza boxes, coffee filters, and tea bags.
  • Other green material such as potted plant material (no soil), and floral arrangements.

These workshops are designed to provide more detailed information about the program and to answer any questions you may have. Someone is always available to help you over the phone. When you have questions, please contact Alameda County Industries Customer Services at 510- 483-1400.
